Day 11 - Around Dornoch

A morning of walking in Dornoch along the beach, by the golf Course, watching the light aircraft ferrying golfers in and out, followed by the unique sight of great numbers of salmon leaping at the Falls of Shin.

Dornoch Beach

The gulls are everywhere and seem to follow the gannets hoping for scraps. The light caught this one beautifully on the beach and particularly highlighted his red webbed feet.

Dornoch Beach

Quite a sad photograph. The leaning post appeared to be a memorial with a flower bouquet tied to it. The light and dark and reflection somehow seemed poignant as the tide came in.

We couldn't have arranged the sea weed better - resembling a giant catfish left behind by the tide.

Gannets again! We got so absorbed watching them circling up and then stalling before diving for their prey. They need to be successful as often as possible as too many abortive dives can drain them of energy - take off is especially energetic.

Falls of Shin

We'd visited the Rogie falls over a week ago on the way to Applecross but hadn't seen any salmon leaping. However we did here..... maybe 1 a minute for 45 minutes. Some big, some small, some successful, some not. This one made it.
